Our History
The National Park Service (NPS) is a federal agency of the United States tasked with managing and preserving the nation’s national parks, monuments, and other historical and conservation sites. Established on August 25, 1916, by President Woodrow Wilson, the NPS oversees more than 400 areas covering over 84 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. These areas include natural landscapes, historical and archaeological sites, and are designated for their cultural, historical, and ecological significance. The NPS is dedicated to protecting these natural and cultural resources for future generations while also making them accessible to the public for education, recreation, and inspiration.
